bulletBOCAR interventions will sustain HIV and AIDS CSOs

More than sixty staff working for 15 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in the fight against HIV and AIDS in the country has expressed their high expectations on the outcome of interventions being carried out under the Building Organizational Capacity for Results (BOCAR).

Giving their opinions after attending the capacity building sessions on Monitoring and Evaluation and Organizational Development held in their offices between August and September this year, they said the initiative would transform and make CSOs AIDS competent and sustainable enough to deliver the expected results.

Bernadeta Khamis, a Field Officer with Vijana Vision Tanzania in Chunya districts gave this opinion about the initiatives: "We have been trained in good governance and we can now assess ourselves if our organization is in line with principles of good governance or not….the orientation has helped us see if we have been upholding the vision and mission of our organization? After the training we expect some gradual changes in relation to good governance". "We expect to follow and abide by the good governance practices including teamwork and participation among ourselves and with beneficiaries and conduct our business in a transparent manner"

The Project Coordinator, Amon John, remarked that the BOCAR activities have helped his organization understand their core value and how they can interact within and outside the organization. "We believe at the end of the day, we would have raised our visibility on good governance. The training has helped us to review and reflect our shortfalls and strengths in so far as good governance is concerned. The training will also help us review and change some sections in our constitution". Lucas Malangalila, Executive Director of KAEA in Chunya: "We have learned how to practice good accountability and transparency in our organization".

The Accountant with TCSD in Mwanza, Mr. Godwin Kalokora said the initiative on Monitoring and Evaluation and reporting on the basis of TOMSHA would enable his organization to track events and report them. It was about the knowledge on what is essential to be reported about the project.
Shakila Omar-an Ex-University student, now on internship with TCSD was more focused when he applauded the capacity building interventions. " I have learnt is how to prepare the monitoring and evaluation component of the project . Now I know why some projects do not meet its objectives: because there are no proper M&E tool in the plan".

bulletCSOs HIV projects impacting on lives of thousands of beneficiaries

Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) funded by the Rapid Funding Envelope (RFE) in Ludewa, Makete, Musoma, Misenyi and Mbarali districts have reported positive trends in their quest for contributing to a reduction in HIV infection among targeted beneficiaries between June and September 2011.

Through their quarterly reports and face to face interview recently (August-September), beneficiaries, volunteers, local government leaders and CSO personnel gave a positive picture that their projects were playing a significant role in the district, regional and national efforts to bring down HIV prevalence rate through multi-sector efforts.
Vice Chair of the Tanzania Coalition for Sustainable Development (TCSD) in Mwanza, Mr. said his organization has made it possible for 35 women involved in commercial sex work (chomolea) in the fishing areas in Sengerema’s Lake Victoria multiple Islands to abandon their trade and become petty traders and peer educators for others. This was due to tireless efforts by well-trained volunteers who visit each island and discuss, counsel and give correct information to pimps and clients on the dangers of unprotected sex.

In Misenyi district, Kagera region, Dr. George Buberwa, the Executive Director of Misenyi AIDS and Poverty Eradication Crusade (MAPEC) is happy that more and more young people and commercial sex workers, locally known as "dada poa" were retreating from unbecoming sexual practices and behaviours, hence, staying safe.
